OK, so I took a trip to upstate NY and attended my first beer festival at Frontier Field in Rochester, and it was more then I expected and less then I expected. First, more then I expected…
I was shocked at the amount of people! You could barely move at times, but the tasting lines seemed to move pretty fast which presented another problem – to much beer to fast
. I learned the number one rule when attending these festivals – pacing!! There were lots of brewers and lots of choices, you don’t need to try them all, which I attempted to do. You’ll see the results of this in an upcoming episode because I was also shooting and interviewing this event.
It was less then I expected for one disappointing reason. I assumed that a representative of each of the breweries would be present, they weren’t, so when I had questions about the beer, I usually got, “I dunno, I’m just pouring.” For someone like me who wants to learn more about the beer I’m drinking, this answer sucked, but for most of the people there, it was a lot about drinking as much as possible, so I’m sure the majority didn’t care.
Stay tuned in the next few weeks when I post the video!!

Hey Paul,
I think your comments are right on. I was at the beer fest too and wound up drinking way too much and not enjoying the beer. I think your new website is fantastic and have been sharing it with friends. Keep up the great commentary.

Thanks to all that attended this years Flour City Brewers Fest. The issue with all the volunteers sampling beer for the breweries is because the NYS Liquor Authority does not allow brewers to pour their own beer?????? Crazy law that the NYS Brewers Assoc. is working to change. I hope by next year’s fest we will have brewery personnel to answer all your questions.

As a follow up to John’s comment, I want to say Thank You to him! I did an extended interview with John at his Rohrbach Brewery which I will edit shortly and post.
Being my first brewfest, I had no idea brewers could not pour their own beer in NYS – lessoned learned. I’ll be attending Savannah Georgia’s first ever brewfest Labor Day weekend and will have something to compare it to.
Rohrbach did an outstanding job with this event and the fact that so many people showed up is a clear testament to that. I hope my comments didn’t give the impression that I was overly disappointed – I had a GREAT time, and thank my good friend Dan Dayton for being our designated driver that night.
Stay tuned for John’s interview and video in the coming weeks!!

Hi Paul, Just heard about your website from Sharon in Penfield. We lived in Webster, NY for nine years and loved it and miss it. We have been making beer for years and enjoy all aspects of it. We’re very excited about your website and wish you good luck in your endeavor.

Thanks so much for coming to my site, and tell every craft beer lover you know! It’s going to get much better when I have time to devote to it – I plan on shooting a series of homebrew videos which I think many people will like. I’m also heading out to Washington and Idaho in a few weeks so I’ll see what I can find out there.
