Genesee Brewing: Bock Beer, Ep. 142

There is nothing better to the Beer America TV team of Paul Leone and John Pinkerton then receiving a package of beer in the mail. Even better is when one of our viewers sends it!! This week we discuss Genesee Bock Beer thanks to our good friend Brian Stiehler from Rochester New York. As part of their Heritage Series, the Genesee Brewing company has been brewing this Bock since the late 1800’s and after a bit of a hiatus, brought it back in 1951 and has been making it ever since. The can is awesome and the beer inside is damn tasty, so sit back and relax and enjoy this weeks episode! Thanks again Brian!!

  • Jen Said,

I’m surprised to see Genesee on here and even more surprised to hear positive things about it, considering how terrible Genny Cream Ale is. It is lovely packaging, though! A rather uneven episode though–would like to have heard a clearer explanation on Bock beer.

Great comments Jen. Although I have to disagree with you, I actually think their Cream Ale is an excellent Cream Ale, although truth be told, I was afraid for years to try it when I lived in Rochester. Genny needs marketing help because they do brew a few good beers, but I think most people are stuck on the image that they brew gutter beer. The Bock is excellent, and if you want to know more about the style, check out the previous two episodes we shot dealing with Saint Arnolds and Rahr – we talk more about the style in those.

    Thanks for the comment!!!

Love your videos. I enjoy watching you and John play off of one another. John gives his point of views as a Brew Master and you as a “regular guy”. Great videos. Keep it up.

Glad to see the old home town and Genesee getting some positive vibes for local business. It has been many years since my beer drinking days so it would not be fair to assume that Genesee brewery has not made vast improvements. What is the connection between them and Sam Adams?

  • Video BrewMaster Said,

Genesee brews decent beer overall, nothing earth shattering, but very drinkable brews. The Bock and Cream Ale are good beers in my opinion. The connection to Sam Adams is that they contract brew for them – in other words, the Sam Adams you buy in that region is actually brewed at the Genesee Brewing Company. In truth, Sam Adams does this with breweries all over the country.

Yeah, Shiner Bock isn’t actually a bock, but more of an American Dark Lager, if we’re being technical about it.
